Perhaps you have been praying for a breakthrough in your health, marriage, finances, business or family. You have prayed for weeks, months or even years, but nothing appears to be changing.

“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” — Mark 11:24

These are powerful and encouraging words. But what did Jesus mean? Is He promising that if we believe strongly enough, we will always receive exactly what we ask for?

Have Faith in God

The answer begins in the previous verses. Jesus said, “Have faith in God” (Mark 11:22). He did not say, “Have faith in your breakthrough.” Neither did He tell us to have faith in our own ability to believe.

Our faith must be placed in God—His power, goodness, wisdom and faithfulness. God is able to change any situation. No illness, financial problem, broken relationship or impossible circumstance is beyond His power. We may therefore come to Him confidently and ask Him to intervene.

Believe That God Has Heard You

When Jesus tells us to believe that we have received what we asked for, He is teaching us to pray with confidence. Once we have honestly placed our request before God, we can trust that He has heard us—even when we cannot yet see the answer.

“If we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.” — 1 John 5:14

The words “according to His will” are important. Biblical faith is not believing that God must follow our plans. It is trusting that God’s plan is better than ours.

When God’s Answer Is Different

The apostle Paul prayed three times for his “thorn in the flesh” to be removed. Paul believed in God, prayed sincerely and certainly had great faith. Yet God did not remove the problem. Instead, God told him, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

Paul received an answer, but it was not the answer he originally wanted. His breakthrough was not the removal of his weakness. It was discovering that God’s grace could carry him through it.

Jesus also prayed in Gethsemane: “Abba, Father, everything is possible for You. Take this cup from Me. Yet not what I will, but what You will” (Mark 14:36). That was not a lack of faith. It was faith in its purest form.

What Does a Breakthrough Look Like?

We often imagine that a breakthrough means the immediate removal of our problem. Sometimes God does answer that way. But a breakthrough can also look different from what we expected:

  • Peace while the storm continues
  • Strength to face another day
  • Wisdom for a difficult decision
  • Freedom from fear or bitterness
  • The courage to forgive
  • A closed door that protects us
  • Grace to endure what remains
  • A changed heart before changed circumstances

Sometimes God changes our circumstances. At other times, He changes us within those circumstances. Both can be miracles.

Do Not Blame Yourself

It can be painful when someone says, “Your breakthrough did not come because you did not have enough faith.” That is not a fair or complete explanation. It places a terrible burden upon people who are already suffering.

A sick person who is not healed should not automatically be accused of lacking faith. A struggling family should not be told that they failed because they did not pray correctly. Our confidence does not rest in the size of our faith, but in the faithfulness of our God.

Pray Boldly, but Surrender the Answer

You may certainly ask God for your breakthrough. Tell Him exactly what you need. Pray boldly, sincerely and expectantly. Do not give up simply because the answer has not yet appeared. But also leave room for God to answer in His way and at His time.

The Greatest Breakthrough

Our greatest need is not financial success, perfect health or a trouble-free life. Our greatest need is to be reconciled to God. Jesus came to break the power of sin and death. Through His death and resurrection, forgiveness and eternal life are offered to everyone who believes in Him.

So keep praying. Believe that God hears you. Trust that He is working, even when you cannot see it. Ask Him boldly for the breakthrough you desire—but trust Him enough to decide what the answer should look like.

Faith is not certainty that God will give us everything we want. Faith is certainty that God remains faithful, whatever His answer may be.
