What does the Future Hold?

Back in the day I remember watching a movie about a man who stumbles on tomorrow’s newspaper and the next day everything happens just as it had been reported. Every day he would get the next day’s paper and that would give him the advantage to be at the right place at the right time when the action happened. I was thinking about that and how that would give one such an edge especially in this world of social media. We all want to know what our future will be like or we want to feel like our future is secure. Because of that, many of us worry a lot about the future and what it holds for us and our families.

Philippians 4: 6-7
6 Do not be anxious or worried about anything, but in everything [every circumstance and situation] by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, continue to make your [specific] requests known to God. 7 And the peace of God [that peace which reassures the heart, that peace] which transcends all understanding, [that peace which] stands guard over your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus [is yours].

Jesus tells us not to worry about tomorrow because each day has enough troubles of its own. When you think about your future and that of your family, what kind of emotions does the thought provoke? Is it worry and anxiety or is it Joy and peace? We worry about the future because we have no control of what will happen and when we are in such situations our minds usually gravitate towards the worst case scenario.

Now we may not know what will happen tomorrow but we know one who can see tomorrow and that is where we put our trust, in Christ Jesus. Just like the man in the movie who had confidence because he had access to a newspaper that revealed to him what would happen the next day, we serve a God who knows the future. He is not limited to time like we are, He is already living in our future and that is why He would say that He has good plans for our life.

Even for us believers, even though we have put our trust in God, our humanity causes us to worry and to be anxious from time to time especially when what we see in the natural is not looking good. That is why we need a reminder every now and then, a word that reminds us that God is in control and that when we read the end of the book, as long as we hold on to Jesus and we do not compromise, then we are assured that we will come out victorious and with a glorious future!

Do not worry about your future; instead commit everything to God in prayer and let His peace guard over your heart and mind.
