The Bread of Life

John 6:35 Amplified Bible (AMP)
35 Jesus replied to them, “[a]I am the Bread of Life. The one who comes to Me will never be hungry, and the one who believes in Me [as Savior] will never be thirsty [for that one will be sustained spiritually].

When people ask me what my favorite food is, many get surprised when I say bread. I just love bread; always have ever since I was a little child. Today bread is not considered to be that important but back in the bible days, bread was very important. It was one of the main meals unlike today.

Jesus had just fed the 5000 with the loaves and the fish and having crossed over to Capernaum with his disciples, the crowds have followed him. This right after he walked on water. The crowds were following him because they wanted bread; they wanted to see another physical sign. Jesus boldly declares that he is the bread of life and the crowds have a hard time understanding what He is talking about.

A part from the physical hunger that we all have that drives us to eat food; we also have a spiritual hunger. If we do not eat food then our bodies become weak and eventually we will die. Hunger is the mechanism and trigger that God put in our bodies to remind us to eat so that we can replenish the strength and the nutrients that our physical bodies need to remain healthy. What we eat determines our health.

In the same way, we have a spiritual hunger that is a trigger and mechanism to remind us that we cannot survive without God. Many mistake that hunger for something else and we try and fill it with other things like sex or drugs and alcohol or money and career. Only Jesus can fill that hunger. He alone is the bread of life. Remember he is the word of God because the bible says that the word was made flesh and He lived among us. Jesus also goes on to tell us;
Matthew 4:4 (AMP)

4 But Jesus replied, “It is written and forever remains written, ‘MAN SHALL NOT LIVE BY BREAD ALONE, BUT BY EVERY WORD THAT COMES OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.’”

No matter how we try, we cannot live by the physical bread alone, we need the spiritual bread which is the word of God (Jesus) and we need to live by every word that comes out of the mouth of God. He created us so He knows exactly what we need!
Read and meditate on the word every day, have some bread!
