Pursuing Excellence: A Mindset of Excellence

The Greek word for excellence used in the New Testament comes from the word perisseu which means to have in abundance, to increase, to surpass. Biblical excellence is to do your best with what God has given you.

For this to happen, you must have the right attitude.

Think about Daniel. He and his friends are captured and taken to a foreign land against their will. They have to learn a new way of life but even under such extreme circumstance, he is able to distinguish himself because he had an excellent spirit within him. He did his best with what was given he did not complain about the circumstances and the oppression, instead he gave his best.

Excellence is not about what you can do, rather it is about the attitude you have about what you are doing. Think about the story of the talents. The man who was given 1 talent did not have an excellent spirit and thus he did nothing with what he was given. He was full of complaint and excuses.

The Bible tells us that whatever our hands find to do, we should do it with all our might. We are also required to do it as unto the Lord. Daniel and his three friends had the right attitude and whatever they did, they gave it their all.

What about you and I today? Does the environment we find ourselves in affect our attitude so that we don’t pursue excellence in what we do?

Do we let other peoples mediocrity affect what we do because after all nobody is giving their best?

Just like winners have a winning attitude, so do those who are excellent, they have an excellent spirit or attitude no matter how big or small the job is and no matter who is watching or not watching, they give their best each time.
