Principles of Stewardship: The Principle of Ownership

Matthew 25:14 NKJV
“For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them.
The parable of the talents tells the story of a master and his servants. Jesus begins this parable by likening it to the kingdom of God meaning that this parable gives us a glimpse of kingdom principles of stewardship. The master in the parable delivers his goods to his servants and from that we get our first principle. The master owns everything and the servants own nothing. They are just custodians of what the master gives them.
Psalm 24:1-2
The earth is the LORD’S, and all it contains, the world, and those who dwell in it. For He has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers.
Everything belongs to the Lord meaning we have nothing to brag or be proud about. The bible says that there is nothing we have that we have not been given.
When we have the understanding that God owns everything, then we will look to him to direct us on how to use the resources he has given us be it time, talents or treasure. When we have the understanding that God is our Father and he gave us his only begotten son Jesus, then we have the revelation that there is nothing he will deny those who love him.
Psalms 84:11 NKJV
For the Lord God is a sun and shield; The Lord will give grace and glory; No good thing will He withhold From those who walk uprightly.
As a friend once told me, in the kingdom of God we do not strive to own because all belongs to God, rather, we have the privilege of access. We do not need to own to enjoy. God will give us the access to what we need when we need it.
With that understanding we can then be a cheerful giver and not brag about what we have because we are just stewards.
Reflections.
What’s the most expensive thing in your possession?
Would you struggle if God directed you today to give it out?
What should your attitude be, now that you know that your Heavenly Father owns everything and no good thing will he withhold to those whose ways are blameless?
