Peculiar People

Matthew 5:13-14
You are the salt of the earth……. You are the light of the world.
Salt and sugar look almost similar. Have you ever made the mistake of putting sugar in your food thinking it was salt? As much as sugar is sweet, I am sure that it did not bring out the flavor in the food and neither was the taste of the food too good that you thought of replacing salt with sugar henceforth.
Salt and light are distinct and the thing is, wherever they are in use, they stand out. Salt dissolves in the food but you can feel its effects, it cannot be ignored. Light on the other hand is very visible, it dispels darkness whenever it shows up no matter how small it is.
To be salt and light we must embrace our distinctiveness. We must recognize and take seriously our mandate. Jesus said we are the salt and we are the light. Not we are like but that we are….. Now.
Romans 12:2 NKJV
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
So many times we try to fit it and when we actually succeed in doing so then we become salt that has lost its flavor and we are of no use to Gods kingdom. We must think differently because we are different. We must embrace our uniqueness and display it for the world to see just as the salt and light do.
The bible says we are a peculiar people meaning we are so different than what the world is or expects and that is who we must always be.
The closer we walk with Jesus, the more we become like him and the more we embrace our saltiness and shine our light and the more the world sees our distinctive nature. Remember when we love the world we become more like it and to love the world is to be an enemy of God.
We are disciples of Jesus we are the salt and the light and we are very distinct from the world. Let’s embrace our new nature and shine for God. Let’s be salty and lit!
