JOHN 14:16-17 AMP
And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor–Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), to be with you forever– the Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive [and take to its heart] because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He (the Holy Spirit) remains with you continually and will be in you.
I love watching court room dramas. To watch and listen to lawyers go head to head is exciting for me. Sometimes the accused is innocent but having a bad lazy and uninformed lawyer gets them put behind bars. A lawyer pleads out your case to the judge or jury. He speaks on our behalf to and that is what the Holy Spirit does for us. The Holy Spirit is the spirit of truth He is the Spirit of God and He knows the mind of God that makes Him the perfect advocate for you and I. No wonder He nudges at our hearts when we miss the mark because He understands God’s standard. This emphasizes the importance of having constant fellowship with Him because then He guides us into all truth.
JOHN 16:13 AMP
But when He, the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth [full and complete truth]. For He will not speak on His own initiative, but He will speak whatever He hears [from the Father–the message regarding the Son], and He will disclose to you what is to come [in the future].
An advocate speaks on behalf of whom they are representing. Back to the court room dramas; sometimes you will find someone who thinks they can represent themselves and speak on their own behalf but they mess things up because they do not understand the law.
The Bible says in;
ROMANS 8:26-27 AMP
In the same way the Spirit [comes to us and] helps us in our weakness. We do not know what prayer to offer or how to offer it as we should, but the Spirit Himself [knows our need and at the right time] intercedes on our behalf with sighs and groanings too deep for words. And He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because the Spirit intercedes [before God] on behalf of God’s people in accordance with God’s will.
Prayer is talking to God, presenting our issues to the ultimate judge but in our limitation we don’t even know how we ought to pray or what to pray for and our advocate steps in to ensure we are taken care of. Wow, that’s a great scripture and it is filled with such great reassurance. Bottom line, we have the best Advocate.
