Joy in trials

James 1:2
2 Consider it nothing but joy, my [b]brothers and sisters, whenever you fall into various trials.

None of us looks forward to trials; in fact we would rather avoid them at all costs. When trials come our way, many of us sometimes interpret that to mean that God is not pleased with us and thus He is out to punish us. On the other hand we sometimes think of others that their faith is not strong enough and thus they are going through trials. One thing that the bible brings out clearly is that trials are part and parcel of our Christian walk and they have a purpose which we will explore throughout this week.
We are to consider it nothing but joy whenever we fall into various trials. That seems like such a contradiction, how do we find joy in the midst of trials? The natural inclination is to complain and sometimes even blame someone else for the calamities that we are going through.
What is your attitude when you are going through trials? James tells us not to have any other attitude but one of joy. Out attitude is our settled way of thinking or feeling about something. Our attitude about an issue determines out perspective and response to it. Some people see an opportunity in trials while others see nothing but disaster and thus they respond by complaining.
One of the most encouraging responses and attitudes towards trials in the bible is found in the book of Job.

Job 13:15 Bible (NASB)
15 “Though He slay me, I will hope in Him Nevertheless I will argue my ways [a]before Him.

With all that he went through, losing his children, property and health, Job was still able to stand firm and declare that his hope was still in the Lord, he also knew who to talk to concerning his issues for he says he will argue his ways before God. It is only when we understand that trials have a place and purpose in our growth and walk as disciples of Christ that we will be able to maintain a right attitude in the midst of the trial.

Are you currently going through a trial? Do not complain and point fingers like the children of Israel in the wilderness, instead count it all joy and find a voice to praise the Lord because He is right there with you because He made a promise never to leave us not forsake us.
The trial is but for a season and it has a purpose to accomplish in your life, remember all things work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purposes.
