Matthew 4:18-19
18 As Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He noticed two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19 And He said to them, “[a]Follow Me [as My disciples, accepting Me as your Master and Teacher and walking the same path of life that I walk], and I will make you fishers of men.”
Jesus was a master teacher and disciple maker. I love the fact that He took the so-called nobodies and He turned them into fearless men who turned the world upside down. Think about this, a King coming to re establish His kingdom in a domain, you would expect Him to surround himself with mighty men of war. Soldiers who are fierce and experienced ready to go in and conquer. That was not the strategy that Jesus used. He did not even work with the religious folk of the day, instead he chose ordinary men.
From several fishermen to a tax collector, these is the calibre of men that Jesus choose and I am glad He did because through their encounters we are able to see the power in the word of God to transform any ordinary man into a disciple of Christ.
Being human sometimes we write off people because we think they are not educated enough or they are not polished enough or they are too far gone and lost in sin that even if God saved them, they may not be the right fit to preach the gospel and make disciples.
Jesus took this ordinary “unschooled” men and He walked with them for about three and a half years and the power of His words transformed them into powerful men who spoke and marvelled the masses, even the religious folk of the day.
These ordinary men walked in and demonstrated the power of the kingdom of God and converted and made disciples that in turn raised other disciples till the good news has now gotten to us thousands of years later.
This one thing is for sure, we may not be able to change anyone and in our eyes some people may seem like they are too far gone but if we disciple them and teach them to observe the word of God then they will be transformed into powerful disciples of Jesus.
