In Spirit and Truth

John 4:23-24
23 But a time is coming and is already here when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit [from the heart, the inner self] and in truth; for the Father seeks such people to be His worshipers.24 God is spirit [the Source of life, yet invisible to mankind], and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.

Our worship is a response to what we know about God. If what we know is erroneous then so too will out worship. Jesus says that we must worship in spirit and in truth. Jesus is the truth. Remember He boldly proclaimed In

John 14:6 (AMP)
6 Jesus said to him, “[a]I am the [only] Way [to God] and the [real] Truth and the [real] Life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

Meaning it is only through Jesus who is the truth that we can truly worship God. To try and worship God apart from Jesus is a futile exercise because then, we would be trying to worship God without truth because Jesus is the truth.

We must worship God in spirit because He is a spirit. God is not looking for outward displays of religion that so many are keen to perform and yet from the way they live their life you can tell that their hearts are so far away from God. To truly worship God we must connect with Him on a spiritual level, our spirits have to be alive through Christ Jesus our hearts must be truly connected. Many times we judge worship by what we can see physically and we even forget that we are not the ones to judge how good or acceptable the worship was because it is not being directed to us. God to whom the worship is directed is the only one who can judge how acceptable the worship is and He tells us for the worship to be accepted it must be done in spirit and in truth, anything done apart from that no matter how humanly beautiful it may look or sound is not acceptable worship before God.

True worship is not forced, it is not a duty that has to be performed, true worship springs from a heart that connects with God and longs to be seen by Him. A heart that is not perfect but one that is honest, broken, vulnerable and truthful.
