Hebrews 2:1-3
1 We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. 2 For since the message spoken through angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, 3 how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation?
Drifting is not a shipwreck yet… and there in lies the deception. One of the things we have learned is that drifting happens in such a subtle manner that when its happening to you, you hardly ever notice it. Those who may notice that you are drifting may try to warn you but because you do not see it, you may not take heed to their warning because you assume that you are ok.
I have heard stories of young men who know not how to swim going out into the ocean and drowning simply because when they were playing at the show, they were so focused on the play that they did not notice that they were drifting and soon enough they were carried into the deep waters and they drowned.
The writer of Hebrews warns us by reminding us of the old covenant message was spoken of by angels and it was binding. Any one who walked in disobedience received its full punishment. How much more us who have the new covenant spoken of by the very son of God. If we ignore it and allow ourselves to drift away from such a great salvation, what makes us think we will escape the judgement of God?
Drifting is not a shipwreck but this one thing is guaranteed, if you get comfortable in your drifting, then it is inevitable that you will be shipwrecked and you will receive the full punishment for violation and walking in disobedience to the word of God you have heard!
Reflections
Drifting is not shipwreck! How has this thinking affected you in your walk with the Lord?
Think about the old covenant and how God dealt with those who walked in disobedience, what can you and I today learn from that?
What must you do to ensure that you do not drift away?
