John 11:21-22 NKJV
Now Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.”
Have you ever believed God for something or stood believing on a promise from God and things got worse instead? That’s the story of Lazarus.
When he gets sick, his sisters Martha and Mary sent word for Jesus to come but Jesus does not come immediately, instead he shows up 4 days after Lazarus has been buried. I am sure there are those in the crowd who wondered why Jesus had bothered to come anyway because Lazarus was already dead and buried. In fact, some of them said, “Could not this Man, who opened the eyes of the blind, also have kept this man from dying?”
At the time Mary and Martha had sent word to Jesus I am sure they were hopeful. They held on to the hope that yes our brother is sick but we have seen Jesus heal the sick and when he comes our brother will be well. They waited and waited and things got worse, Lazarus died. That must have dashed all their hopes because they had not seen Jesus bring back anyone from the dead. To add to that Jesus still did not show up. Now they have buried their brother and he has been in the tomb several days, already the body is rotting and it seems like such a finality and nothing can be done. This is when Jesus shows up.
Do you find yourself in a similar situation, have things gotten from bad to worse and it seems like such a finality and all hope is gone?
I love what Jesus said to Martha and he would say the same thing to you and I.
John 11:40 NKJV
Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?”
Jesus did what they had never seen done before, he raised a man back to life a man who was dead buried and already rotting. This was a greater miracle than healing the sick and they all were witness to the glory of God.
When things get from bad to worse, don’t loose hope don’t get into despair hold on to Jesus because if you hold on and believe, you will see the glory of God.
