Colossians 3:16-17 NKJV
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
Why do you do what you do and how do you do it? One of the most revealing scriptures about the success of Christs ministry while he was on earth is;
John 5:19-20 NKJV
19 Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. 20 For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel.
Jesus did not just do anything for the sake of doing it. He had a point of reference and that was his Father. He only did what he saw the father do and he did it as unto his father and with the Fathers authority.
That should apply to us as well especially in this generation where we are told to do whatever makes us happy or even to follow our passions. We should follow Christ.
Whatever we do in word, meaning whatever we say and in this generation, whatever we say with our key boards, we should say it in the name of the Lord! Remember;
Matthew 12:35-36
36 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
Every word we speak will be judged. Now that’s scary, imagine all the words you have spoken since you learned how to speak. An idle word here means words that are useless and unfruitful. Words that are barren idle and slow in connection with Gods will and purpose.
The same applies to our deeds and that is why Jesus only did what he saw the Father do. This reinforces for us the importance of depending on the Holy Spirit to guide us in all we do, even in the things we feel we are self sufficient.
Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall [a]direct your paths.
But the most exciting thing is that what Christ directs us to do, we do in his authority under his oversight. We are never alone and we never do it alone. Christ has given us power and authority to do that which he has commissioned us to do. That’s EXCITING!!!
Reflections
Does Knowing that every idle word we speak will be judged make you want to think through each word you say?
What do you do and why do you do it?
Are you walking in Christs power and authority?
