Colossians 3:16-17 NKJV
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
It is said that a Christian who does not read the word is a dying Christian. Paul is urging us to let the word of God dwell in us richly. This means it is a matter of choice. We have to let it otherwise if we are not willing then it will not. Now many believers would say that reading the word is a struggle and rightly so because from the parable of the sower we learn that the enemy is after the word and he will not let it take root in your heart when given the chance.
Joshua 1:8 NKJV
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
Just like God told Joshua, we are to commit to read this word, study it, memorise it, meditate on it, obey it and also teach it to others. This is not something we should do once a week but rather every day and night.
Paul also connects allowing the word to dwell in us richly to singing and admonishing one another in psalms hymns and spiritual songs.
Music is powerful. Someone once said that music is the only thing that enters your sub conscience mind without your permission and without much effort. It takes very little effort to memorise music and it stays for a lifetime. Music evokes emotions and music brings people together.
We are to connect to the word of God and with one another emotionally as well. We should think about what we sing about and not just sing anything because music is not just music, it has a spiritual connection.
Reflections.
How richly would you say the word of God dwells in you?
What do you need to do to ensure you grow in your daily dedication to the study and obedience of Gods word?
Music is powerful, what kind of music do you listen to and how has it affected your life?
