Genesis 17:1-2 NKJV
When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless. And I will make My covenant between Me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly.”
Jehovah Elshaddai means God Almighty. Abram had a promise from God, the promise of a son but it seemed like the promise was taking too long. After counsel from his wife Sarah, Abram lays with his maid servant Hagar and she conceives but this is not the son of promise.
When Abram is 99 God appears to him revealing himself as God all mighty Elshaddai. The God who is all powerful the God with whom nothing is impossible. God promises him that he will make him the father of many nations and it is at this point that God changes his name from Abram to Abraham.
Abraham was old and his wife was well past the age of child bearing but because they put their faith in El shaddai, God all mighty then that which he promised came to pass. God is able to do what no man can do he is all mighty.
Elshaddai also has another meaning, it is derived from the word “shad” which means breast in Hebrew. This talks of nourishment and nature as a mother would provide to her child.
Our God is all sufficient and he will nourish and satisfy us supplying all that we need just as he did with Abraham. He is all powerful meaning nothing is impossible with him and his desire is to nourish and supply all our needs, now that’s the God we serve.
Reflective Thoughts.
Do you believe that God is almighty? If you do, why then do you allow yourself to worry?
