Character of God: Jehovah Adonai

Genesis 15:2 NKJV

But Abram said, “Lord GOD, what will You give me, seeing I [a]go childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”

The name Adonai means Lord and master and it is first used in the Bible by Abraham in Genesis 15:2. After having victory over his enemies, Abraham acknowledges God as his Lord and master.

Many people today are quick to acknowledge God as their God but they do not acknowledge Him as their Lord and master. To declare God as Jehovah Adonai over your life means that you acknowledge that He has power and authority over you. It means that He has rulership over your life. It is to declare that He is the great one and there is none above Him.

Jesus said;
Luke 6:46
46 “Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not practice what I tell you?

Is this not the reality in many people’s lives? They acknowledge that Jesus is the savior but they have not made Him Lord and master over their life. They are still the Lord and master over their own lives, doing what they want to do and ignoring what God says yet they still want to claim him as their God. You cannot claim to know God unless you know Him as the master over your life. When you make Him Adonai over your life then it means that you surrender your will and you allow his will to reign over your life. Like Jesus in the garden you are able to say, not my will but thy will be done.

You have to be willing to surrender the control of your life over to Him and that’s one thing many people are afraid to do, no wonder the Bible says that without faith it is impossible to please God.

Do you know Him as God or have you made Him Jehovah Adonai, Lord and master over your life?

Reflective Thoughts
What is the role of a Lord and master over the life of another?
Who is the master over your life, whose word and will do you follow?
Do you trust God enough to make him Lord and master over your life?
